Description
This is a “Fanta” orange with sugar inclusions typical of spessartites.
Spessartite is a species of garnet known for its orange to reddish brown color. The rare bright orange "Fanta" and the reddish orange "Mandarin" colors are particularly prized. Spessartite often have eye-visible "sugar" inclusions which are small evenly spread inclusions.
January's birthstone, garnets consist of a group of closely related materials that come in colors from dark reddish-purple to minty green. They are a 7-7.5 hardness on the Mohs scale making them excellent candidates for jewelry.
This garnet comes from Tanzania, part of the “Mozambique belt,” a band in the Earth’s crust that runs from Antarctica through East Africa.
